History and Mission

Company history
Prof. Dr. Heinz-Herbert Fiebig, MD PhD, is the founder and owner of ONCOTEST. He was trained in preclinical pharmacology and treated cancer patients as a physician for internal medicine, hematology and oncology at the Medical Center of the University of Freiburg. In the beginning his vision was to predict the response of a patient towards cancer drugs by using patient tumor material studied in the clonogenic assay. In parallel, a collection of primary patient tumors was established on nude mice for offering preclinical testing in tumor models of high clinical relevance. As such, Prof. Fiebig developed patient-derived tumor models differing in many aspects from well-known cell line-derived xenografts.
With growing interest from the pharmaceutical industry, ONCOTEST GmbH  was founded in 1993 as an independent company devoted to internal and contract research in oncology. Since then, the ONCOTEST portfolio of services has been continuously expanded with respect to tumor models and histotypes, respective tumor cell lines, assay systems and characterization data. For example, ONCOTEST has studied 30 cytotoxic and targeted standard anti-cancer agents in more than 1,200 in vivo studies, and is able to advise on the selection of models and combination partners for new compounds. As of 2009, ONCOTEST employs 45 people with a background in medical, biological and pharmaceutical sciences, trained as medical doctors, veterinarians, molecular biologists, biochemists and bioinformaticians.

Our mission
is to provide in-depth knowledge in cancer research by conducting internal research on the ONCOTEST tumor collection, thereby differing from a traditional CRO service. We offer high quality project management and consultancy for tailored drug discovery and development. ONCOTEST is well recognized by the scientific community and most of the top ten pharmaceutical companies and many SME and biotech companies use and appreciate our services. Today with state-of-the-art pharmaco- genomic technology, ONCOTEST is also committed to the identification and validation of tests predicting patients response to anti-cancer agent (personalized medicine).
